Artist Bio: Romon Kimin Yang, known as ROSTARR, is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative expression spans painting, abstract calligraphy, large-scale murals, experimental filmmaking and design. Born in South Korea in 1971, Rostarr moved to Washington D.C. with his family at the age of one, eventually making New York City his home in 1989 to pursue his studies at the School of Visual Arts, where he majored in graphic design and printmaking. As a self-taught painter, Rostarr has cultivated a unique artistic voice that reflects his diverse influences and experiences.
With over 30 years of experience in the art world, Rostarr harmoniously intertwines the worlds of art and design, creating a distinctive style that blurs their boundaries. His extensive body of work features abstract polymorphic paintings, geometric characters, and predominantly monochromatic calligraphy works. Known for his spontaneous approach to creation, he seeks to explore freedom within style, medium, and form, continuously evolving his distinctive iconographic visual language, which he refers to as "Graphysics." This term embodies the geometric dynamism that characterizes his art.
As a founding member of the Barnstormers collective, established in 1999 by David Ellis and comprising over 30 artists from New York City and Tokyo, Rostarr has collaborated with a vibrant community of creatives.
Rostarr's accolades include being named one of I.D. magazine’s “I.D. 40 Under 30” in 2000 and receiving an honor at the 2004 A.I.C.P. show at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for his significant contribution to the award winning Nike “Flow” campaign. In February 2010, his groundbreaking motion painting film, Kill The Ego, premiered at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, showcasing his innovative approach to visual storytelling.
His work has garnered international recognition, featured in renowned publications such as Artforum, Modern Painters, and The New York Times. Rostarr has held solo exhibitions in major cities including Tokyo, Paris, Milan, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Hong Kong, and Seoul, while also participating in group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including the acclaimed Beautiful Losers exhibition, which has traveled to contemporary art centers around the globe.
